About Amma Mata Amritananda Mayi, lovingly known as Amma (Mother), is revered throughout the world as one of the most outstanding humanitarians and spiritual leaders of our time.From early childhood on, Amma exuded an exceptional love and empathy, tirelessly caring for the poor and downtrodden in her community. Today her life is an inspiring example of service to humanity, with every moment dedicated to giving to others.Through her extraordinary acts of love and compassion, Amma has endeared herself to millions of people around the world. In 2002, she was presented with the Gandhi-Luther King Award for Non-Violence at UN-Headquarters in Geneva, and in July 205, Amma and her organizations was granted Special Consultative Status to the United Nations.Amma's Humanitarian Activities"The world today needs proof that our human values are useful, that such qualities as compassion and selflessness have the power to create a great and prosperous society. Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India.Disaster ReliefIn the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Gujerat in 2001, Amma's volunteers provided medical help and rebuilt three entire villages including 1200 homes, schools, community halls and places of worship for different religions.When Tsunami struck the coast of Kerala, South India, where Amma's headquarters are located, Amma immediately started massive relief efforts – free meals for 10, 000 people three times a day, distribution of clothes and money for basic household items, medical assistance and temporary shelters.

Long term projects include a livelihood rehabilitation scheme, trauma treatment and the reconstruction of houses or entire villages in affected areas of India and Sri Lanka. During the first three months, over 20, 000 volunteers from India and abroad helped with relief work.Free HomesAmma's organization has so far built 35,000 brick homes, all of which have been given free to those in need. The building programme has recently been extended to provide another 90,000 homes.Free Foods50,000 of the poorest of the poor are fed every month.National Legal ServiceCell of 1008 lawyers offers free legal aid to the poor.Pensions for Destitude WomenDue to the absence of any social security system in India, abandoned women and widows suffer great hardship.

Amma will provide 50,000 pensions to cover their essential needs. Already thousands of women receive monthly benefits.Educational InstitutesAmma has established 55 schools, including schools for tribal and special needs children, three universities, a college of medicine, a nursing school, computer and management training centres and colleges of engineering.HealthcareA multi-facility, 1300 bed hospital provides medical care in an atmosphere of love and compassion. The most needy get even highly specialised treatments like open heart surgery free. An AIDS care centre, a hospice for terminally ill cancer patients, homes for elderly and free medical throughout India are also provided.OrphanageThis institution is dedicated to caring for 500 children. They receive excellent education, nourishing food and loving care.Environment ProjectsGreen friends is an organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of the environment. This projects fosters love and respect for the natural world, holding that humankind is a part of nature, not a separate entity.
